I recently returned from a Mindfulness training on the outskirts of Zion National Park in southwestern Utah. Being surrounded each day by the craggy, monolithic peaks, aware of over 250 million years of history woven into the fabric of sandstone striations, a thought emerged that we are both fragile and warriors simultaneously.

While entertaining this dialectic, I recognize that despite our struggles, we have resiliency and power to overcome life’s challenges. The more skillful we are in navigating through these difficulties, the easier life can become. The majesty of Zion has survived seismic activity, Jurassic winds, and a multitude of huge geological shifts. Creatures great and small have had to acclimatize and adapt to the changing environment – much as we have to adapt to our life challenges too!

DBT teaches me effective ways to adapt to challenges; ways to acknowledge and manage my thoughts, emotions, and behaviors and most important of all, to find gratitude and grace in resiliency. My trip to Zion brought home a greater awareness that we are more powerful than we give ourselves credit for – WE ARE WARRIORS!
