The Power of Mindfulness

Posted by Ashley in Mindfulness

Yesterday in our Intensive Outpatient Program, Kathy Purdy MFTI, led a mindfulness practice with group members. Kathy, who has had many years of training in yoga and meditation practice, took the group on a mindfulness walk, inviting them to notice their surroundings and to focus on the ‘spaces in-between’. One group member wrote the following poem about her experience. Our DBT team is extremely touched by this beautiful and insightful writing and wanted to share it with you.

THE SPACES IN BETWEEN

I’m standing outside; The sun shines on my face
Enthralled by a simple tree
Noticing only the space within
And all of its intricacies

The tree appears solid and green in its form
But I’m learning this is not so
For there are spaces within the tree
It has potential and room to grow

At first I just noticed a branch with brown bark
That’s all I was able to see
But when I looked closer I saw even more
There was so much more to this tree

The spaces between the branches and leaves
Tell a story of their own
So I took a chance and looked even closer
Into what seemed to be the unknown

Peering even closer now
My eyes moved past the branch
And I saw a shade of bluish white
I stood there still, entranced.

Within this small space I could see even more
The blue was the vast open sky
And as I looked closer, one more time
I saw a wing of bird in flight

Standing there mindfully a thought came to me
I welcomed it with grace
How could there be so much hidden
In this small and simple space

If space exists within a tree alone
Then surely there is space within me
Space to grow, space to fill
Or space I can simply let be.

Some parts of me are like this tree
They may appear empty to some
But at a closer, more intimate look
It consists of who I can become

A small simple girl with so much more
Than what can be seen from outside
A girl with purpose: A girl with space.
Where so much more can reside.

And as I gently look within myself
I’m starting to see something new
The spaces within aren’t empty or void
They tell a story of something so true

The spaces are infinite, they have no end
And neither does my story
The spaces you see, and the ones you don’t
Are all a part of my glory.

I am like this tree and it’s a beautiful thing
To have these spaces within
For only by acknowledging the simple spaces
Can my healing truly begin.
