Self-Soothe During the Change of Seasons

I love this time of year! The leaves are starting to change color, there is a chill in the air, and coziness is calling. Last year I wrote about one of my favorite concepts – hygge! Hygge is a Danish concept that represents “a mood of coziness and comfortable conviviality with feelings of wellness and contentment”. A wonderful way that we can practice this is through the DBT Skill – Self-Soothe. It is important to be mindful of our senses to calm our minds and bodies.

Notice what you can see:
– Leaves changing color, pumpkins everywhere, cloudy skies…
Observe what you can hear:
– Howling wind, crunch of the foliage on the ground….
Enjoy the comforting tastes of the season:
– Spicy tastes of nutmeg and cinnamon, comfort foods like warm soups and grilled cheese sandwiches…
Breathe in the aromas:
– Pumpkin spice, strong coffee and pine scented candles and the smell of fresh rain…
Touch the cozy textures:
– Soft blankets, cashmere sweaters and leather boots!
