Family and Couples Therapy

We offer both family and couples therapy at DBT Center of Orange County. Family and couples work can be very impactful to explore interpersonal dynamics, improve communication and connection. It can also facilitate effective ways to reduce conflict and be able to discuss challenges together.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) believes that we affect our environment and our environment affects us. It can be difficult to see the nature of these interactions when we are in them. Our DBT clinicians offer a perspective outside of the family system to help provide deeper understanding and support with effective change.

Examples of What Can Be Addressed Within Family and Couples Therapy:

Family Therapy

At DBT Center of Orange County, we approach Family Therapy through a DBT lens. We introduce many of the same tools in a DBT framework including DBT skills such as validation, interpersonal effectiveness, distress tolerance, and emotion regulation. A behavior chain analysis (BCA) is often used to explore instances of friction in order to enhance awareness and increase opportunities for skillfulness and improved communication.

Couples Therapy

Conflict within a relationship can be extremely painful and frustrating. Our clinicians at DBT Center of Orange County balance accepting the needs of each person in the relationship and navigating how to support them in an effective way. Clinicians draw from evidenced-based treatments, with a focus on Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). In contrast to traditional talk therapy, DBT focuses on emotions, as well as concrete behavioral changes to make tangible improvements.
